Today on this episode of the NP Dude I contemplate recent comments from the new HHS Director, Tom Price, how this may be a signal for the new culture from the HHS in implementing rules such as CARA, and how this may or may not impact you as a provider. Jeff,
This was a great pod cast! A lot to consider. I do have a question, Does it state in CARA that that you have to work with an addiction Dr? I may be wrong, but I thought it defined that? I for one would be willing to become trained an offer suboxene but my collaborating physician is not interested.
Hi Bridgett! No…the law just explicitly states that APRNs can do suboxone and no mention about with or without a collaborator. In Ohio, however, the OBON has limited our scope of practice to that of the collaborating physician (or physicians) so you cannot do it unless they are Waiver Trained. The logic is that in Ohio all patients have the legal availability to demand to see the collaborating physician within a certain period of time. That’s why there is a possible conflict between federal and state laws. Stay in touch and come be on the show sometime!
