On this episode of the NP Dude podcast I discuss why I seem to be swimming against the stream and think NP residencies may not be as good as everyone thinks!  I also respond to a Chronic Intractable who asked about side hustles.  Also, if you haven’t checked him out yet, Chris Woods who runs the NP Money show gets a shout out! I can use help supporting the show by shopping through the Amazon Affiliate link or by going to the main page and clicking the donate button (yup, that’s new).  Keep sharing and give me a rating on Facebook and iTunes!  Send your comments to Jeff@theNPDude.com or PM me on Facebook!

  1. I disagree with your take on this. I have researched fellowships for NPs over the past year. The didactic training and rounds that coincides with the fellowships I have explored are well worth the cost. (Most programs are called fellowships for NPs.) Especially in the programs offered by Boston Children’s/Harvard, Carolina Health Care, Duke and others. There are many that are the equivalent to the ones offered to the MDS. Curious, how long did you research this topic before making this podcast? Was it based off of this one individual’s ignorant comment? That individual was clearly not offering a true fellowship. I challenge you to look into it more thoroughly.

  2. Thanks for listening and a good comment. I’m sure those programs you mentioned are wonderful but does not relate to my concerns for the future regarding how residency programs may be used as tool to exploit NPs. Thanks again for listening!

  3. One of my sons (now 24) started a lawn mowing business in the neighborhood before he could drive. I came home one day shortly after he got his license and there was a trailer in the driveway with a sign Rouse’s yard care. He has always done lawns on the side and recently quit his job and went full time for the summer while looking for another. The conversation in my car with some of my other kids and their friends the other day was– Ian (almost 13) you could get a job by mowing lawns in your neighborhood. Ian, “Ya, Nathan did that.” –So you could too.– Ian, “No, I can’t he still does all of them.”
    Start ’em young.
